North Carolina’s mountains have long been a haven for flyfishing enthusiasts. They are also home to the first fly fishing trail in the U.S. The Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail, includes portions of 11 creeks and 4 rivers and features some of the best trout waters in the Great Smoky Mountains. Serious fly fishers will like the smaller, lesser-known spots such as Pantertown Creek, Chattooga River, Whitewater River and Tanasee Creek. Beginners will enjoy the spots found along the Tuckasegee River.
The Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail maps out 15 of the best spots to catch brown, rainbow and brook trout in the crystal-clear streams of the Great Smoky Mountains. The Trail provides a map for download, descriptions and GPS coordinates for all 15 spots, a weekly fishing report, plus a gallery for users to upload photos of their catches!
If trout fishing is not for you, Jackson County offers a number of high mountain lakes that offer anglers the opportunity to fish for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleye and muskie, as well as panfish and crappie. Some of the best lakes are Bear Lake, Wolf Creek Lake and Lake Glenville.
Orvis, recognized for its unparalleled influence on the sport of fly-fishing and the fly-fishing industry endorses these local businesses in the Asheville/Brevard area.
