The show will run from June 9- July 11. An artist reception will be held on June 27 during Brevard's 4th Friday Gallery Walk from 5-9 pm. This art exhibit is sponsored by Red Wolf Gallery. Sandy Webster is an artist currently working in mixed media. She enjoys producing works for the body, mind and home that evoke ideas of memory and containment, revealing and concealing space and thought. "My art is narrative, a story retold with paints, pencil, collage and collections. Each work is a personal expression of time, place and thought. It is what I call “evidence of experience” garnered from my writings, sketchbooks and the things I gather that have meaning beyond their intended purpose.   After several years working with basketry as her primary medium she went on to receive her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Western Carolina University and her Master of Fine Arts from Norwich University at Vermont College. She lives with her husband in western North Carolina. In addition to her studio work, Sandy Webster has written articles and served as a juror of fiber-related exhibitions while teaching and exhibiting internationally. To learn more about her go to: www.sandywebster.com .   American raku pottery is a unique and magical form of pottery where the glowing hot vessel or sculpture is pulled from the kiln and placed in combustibles in a metal container. The can is then covered, smothering the flames. The results are always serendipitous and the pieces are truly one of a kind! Steven Forbes-deSoule has been focusing on raku pottery exclusively for over 24 years and during that time has created a style which is genuinely distinct. His work has been featured in books and magazines and has been represented by galleries and museums nationwide. “Recently, I have been melting stained glass and glass rods on my unique "halo/opal" glaze, creating a variety of colors and textures.” To learn more about him go to: www.stevenforbesdesoule.com .   The public will have the opportunity to meet both artists at an artist reception on Friday, June 27 from 5-9 pm at TC Arts. This reception will be sponsored by the Red Wolf Gallery. The TC Arts Council gallery is located at 349 S. Caldwell Street in Brevard. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday from 10 am – 4 pm. The band has a high percentage of professional musicians including 14 retired band directors, four music professors, and a world famous composer.  Our conductor is highly renowned for his conducting and is one of the top tuba players in the country.  For the 2008 season the band will be performing four concerts: June 15  featuring Charlie Vernon, trombonist with the Chicago Symphony; July 4 at the Gazebo; an outreach program for College Walk residents on July 7; and a season finale on August 24.  2008 Events Schedule Summer Concert Sunday, June 15 (Father's Day Special) at 3 pmThe Porter Center at Brevard CollegeFeaturing Charlie Vernon, Trombonist, Chicago Symphony Orchestra      4th of July CelebrationFriday, July 4 at 11 amGazebo DowntownFeaturing Copland's Portrait with Mayor Jimmy Harris  Outreach Program at College Walk (for College Walk residents only)Monday, July 7 at 7 pmCollege Walk AuditoriumSeason Finale ConcertSunday, August 24 at 3 pmThe Porter Center at Brevard College  http://www.homeinbrevard.com/post.aspx?postid=556/12/2008 7:26:19 AM PSTMud Dobbers Potter in Brevard The Studio The Carwile-Dodson Studio, opened in April 2004, is located in a renovated  mill building next door to Mud Dabbers Pottery & Crafts.  Both buildings were built in 1922.  The studio is equipped with nine electric wheels, one being a handicap-accessible wheel.  Handbuilding equipment includes a slab roller and two extruders.  Stoneware clay will be used in the classes; it will be fired in an electric oxidation kiln. 3621 Greenville Hwy(Next to Mud Dabbers Pottery)PO Box 1162Brevard, NC 28712(828) 884-5771(828) 884-5131 Hand Building with Suzanne Jones This three-week class will run from April 22 through May 7.Class meets Tuesdays for instruction and Wednesdays for practice from 6 - 9 p.m.  Experiment with various hand- building techniques and learn how to add creative embellishments to your ware. Photo courtesy Brevard Music Center Brevard Music Festival In the cool Blue Ridge mountain-lake setting of Brevard, North Carolina, musicians from all over the world come to study at the Brevard Music Center (BMC), founded 64 years ago, one of the oldest and finest summer music institutions. Its 145 buildings are spread over 140 beautiful mountainside acres. Each year, more than 370 students, ages 14 through post-college, join professional musicians to devote themselves fully to music for seven weeks. In addition to a rigorous schedule of instruction, students also play side by side with faculty and guest artists in the presentation of more than 70 public concerts, staged operas, and musicals for a paying audience. Because there is an emphasis on performing with professional musicians in addition to instruction, Brevard is unique in giving students the opportunity to understand the world of the professional musician. During 2000, students will perform, and visitors will see performances diverse as, Verdi's Aida, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondolier,Strauss' Die Fledermaus, Lerner and Loewe's Brigadoon, Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F and Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Brevard began in 1936 as a summer band camp for boys on the campus of Davidson College. Transferring to the campus of Queens College in Charlotte, North Carolina during WWII, the "Transylvania Music Camp" finally opened its doors in 1945 on a beautiful site just outside the town of Brevard in western North Carolina, thus becoming known as the Brevard Music Center. Its primary mission, from the very beginning, has been to promote quality music education. Today Brevard concentrates on training in performance and music theory under repertory conditions. Brevard Music Center's five orchestras, three bands/wind ensembles, plus piano, classical guitar, composition, conducting and chamber music programs offer numerous performance opportunities for every student. Throughout BMC's history, numerous guest artists, such as Frederica von Stade, who have come to perform have extended their stays to give master classes for students. To study at Brevard, young musicians must have completed a competitive audition and selection process. During the summer of 2000, participants from approximately 40 states and 10 foreign countries will take part in BMC's intensive educational programs. BMC succeeds in living up to its motto: Mentoring - Our Mission; Performing - Our Passion. The project is documented with nine pages of text, a press release, a 2000 season brochure, a booklet on BMC entitled Theme and Variations, a brochure describing 2000 season classes and application form, a glossary magazine, Overture: Your Guide to the Brevard Music Festival, 1999 season, and a magazine article on BMC from Southern Living. Also included are 46 color slides and two videotapes: "Blue Ridge Summer Serenade," and "Impressions," featuring the 1999 Brevard Music Festival. Its pleasant, unhurried small-town environment is rich in natural beauty, cultural heritage, and social amenities. Brevard's close proximity and easy access to major metropolitan areas like Asheville, Charlotte, Greenville and Atlanta make it an ideal place to live. For a small town (approximately 7,000 residents), Brevard is teeming with cultural events and opportunities. Brevard College, a four-year liberal arts college, has recently added the Paul Porter Performing Arts Center, which offers musical performances throughout the year. The world renowned Brevard Music Center, home to outstanding guest musicians and artists during the summer months, offers concerts several times during the week. Numerous festivals fill Brevard's streets throughout the year, contributing to the sense of community that is so evident in this unique mountain town. Brevard's Transylvania Community Hospital is a fully accredited health care facility, with a staff of licensed health care professionals offering around the clock service to patients and the community. A modern facility and sophisticated equipment combine to provide the residents of Brevard with up-to-date, state-of-the-art medical care. From 2,200 to 2,800 feet elevation with southerly latitude, Brevard's climate is especially appealing. Winters are mild and summers offer warm days and cool nights. Residents of Brevard include the well known white squirrels. These beautiful animals can be seen in several areas in and around Brevard. Although they are not a designated species, they are true white in color and have dark eyes like the gray squirrels. Known as “The Land of the Waterfalls," a name derived from the many waterfalls in the nearby Pisgah National Forest, Brevard is a nature lover's paradise. State and National forests cover more than one-third of Transylvania County, providing endless possibilities for hiking, backpacking, camping, and rock climbing. The French Broad and Davidson Rivers are popular for fishing, kayaking, canoeing and tubing. It's this combination of natural scenic beauty and urban convenience that make Brevard such a special place to live. One thing that is not widely publicized is the presence of the rare white squirrel. These creatures are not albinos, but a rare breed of squirrel that has fluorished here since being introduced in 1951. Brevard is proud of our little neighbors and many have become quite tame by the patient folks feeding them. Every year we have a festival downtown Brevard that is a blast for all ages.
