Ground has been broken for Broad River Terrace, a $3.6 million, 62-unit rental apartment complex located on Old Hendersonville Highway between Osborne and Neely roads in Brevard.
The development is across the street from Anderson Heating and Cooling.
The developer is Hollis Fitch of Fitch Development Group of Charlotte.
Fitch says the one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments will be priced at a level considered affordable in today’s market.
He obtained tax credits that allow him to offer lower than market rental prices. The units will be constructed in a series of adjoining two story buildings in “Craftsman” style.
Fitch expects to open the apartments to the public in late April or early May.
The units will range from 800 to 1,282 square feet and will rent from $400 to $550 a month.
At that price, Fitch said, the units will be affordable to families with under 60 percent of the median income for this region, which is $55,000 a year.
The general contractor is Creative Builders, Inc. of Greenville, S.C.
According to Sherry Reese of the Transylvania County Building Department, the county issued five separate building permits for the apartments. Separate permits also were issued for a community building, a picnic shelter and a gazebo.
Creative Builders, Inc. is an award-winning general contracting company located founded in 1971 by William H. “Billy” McCauley.
McCauley said the company is one of the fastest growing commercial build-ers in the region and has an extensive portfolio of work to its credit.
The project is the first of its type in the county for some time, as commercial and residential construction have both been slow in recent years.
Fitch said he began working on the project with the city of Brevard in 2009 by applying for a zoning change.
Initial work that began this week on the site included clearing of brush and identification of trees that can be saved.
He said he intends to save as many trees as possible to screen the site from neighbors.
“I think it’s going to be an excellent place for people to live,” Fitch said.
