In 2009, Duane Aiken, owner and manager of Automated Tool & Machine Inc., began renovating and expanding a building near Brevard, and in January of 2010 moved his operations from a small facility in Penrose to the new site at 1540 Greenville Highway.

“In effect, we gutted the building, installed additional electrical capacity and lighting systems, built a new loading dock and added a wing to house engineering design, offices and a break room,” Aiken says.

Since the relocation, his business volume has continued to grow, and he has hired two additional technical employees and engaged a commissioned manufacturer’s representative to help expand the company’s customer base.

ATM specializes in engineering and fabricating replacement machine parts and components but also designs and manufactures turnkey Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) machines. Recent examples of the latter are automated electrical testing machines for General Electric’s Lighting Division in Hendersonville, the firm’s major customer.

ATM also has several local customers. Examples include providing prototype components and fixtures for Smith Systems, Inc., customized replacement parts for Transylvania Vocational Services (TVS) and machinery and tooling for M-B Industries. Prior to establishing ATM in 2007, Aiken spent 24 years at M-B Industries, 20 of those in a progression of machining and engineering positions.

“We have a strong competitive edge in our market because we provide initial engineering design as well as having turnkey manufacturing capabilities,” Aiken explains. He and his controls engineer, Bill Soderlund, utilize programming software extensively. ATM’s other two employees are Craig Rice and James Owen, who are skilled tool and die makers and machine operators.
