Asheville's Urban Trail
Asheville's Urban Trail
If you are a lover of art and history, you don't want to miss walking Asheville's Urban Trail, a 1.7 mile self- guided walking tour through the streets of downtown, intended as a “museum without walls” which encourages people to stop and visit the businesses along the way.
What makes this Trail so unique is that each of its 30 stations not only has an interesting informative plaque, but also has a bronze sculpture that gives us a glimpse into that particular time period - such as, a sculpture of a bronze top hat, cane, and gloves resting on a bench reminds us of the Grand Opera House that once stood in downtown Asheville, a life-size sculpture showing a group of musicians and dancers representing the area's Southern Appalachian culture, and a replica of Thomas Wolfe's, author and one of Asheville's favorite sons, size 13 shoes in front of his mother's boarding house.
Asheville's rich history is highlighted along the Trail with a focus on five time periods that are designated by pink granite markers in the sidewalk: the feather represents the Guilded Age, the horseshoe represents the Frontier Period, an angel for the Times of Thomas Wolfe, the courthouse for the Era of Civic Pride, and an eagle for the Age of Diversity.
The Urban Trail is a great way to enjoy Ashevilles's downtown while learning about the its history.
