About Asheville: The Paris of the South
Enveloped in the majestic beauty of the Blue Ridge, Asheville was once a well-kept secret. But the secret is out, as millions flock to the city each year to experience its beauty, culture and history. Many never leave, making Asheville and all it has to offer their new home – or the location of their home away from home.
In recent years, Asheville has reinvented itself through the renovation and restoration of older buildings and the carefully considerate construction of new ones. This has afforded Asheville the opportunity to maintain a delicate balance of the past and present, resulting in a quaint, yet modern overall feel. Asheville’s historic district also is the hub of the business district; it’s collection of art deco-style buildings among the largest in the Southeast. Add to this miles and miles of breathtakingly beautiful mountains, coves, hills and valets, and it isn’t hard to see why Asheville and its architectural jewels are together known as the Paris of the South.
Asheville is rated among the top places to live in America. The city sits more that 2,200 feet above sea level, and encompasses forty-one square miles, making it one of the largest cities in the state of North Carolina. Asheville is situated at the junction of the French Broad and Swannanoa Rivers, making fishing and other water sports popular past time. But there’s so much more to life in this treasure of a city than one might think or be able to discover even in two lifetimes.
There’s plenty to keep even the stodgiest of characters entertained while in Asheville. Consider taking a tour of the Biltmore Estate, where you will find 8,000 acres of gardens, walking and horseback riding trails, lakes and one of the country’s most celebrated wineries. Or, take a tour of the house, the stables, or other buildings on the estate, stopping to take High Tea on the grounds. You might go out in town to play a game of golf or tennis, or simple amble about the historic district. Hit the Blue Ridge Parkway to discover the best mountain views and picnic spots. Whatever your pleasure, Asheville can accommodate.
