Brevard’s 9th Annual White Squirrel Festival

The oft-honored 9th Annual White Squirrel Festival gets underway Memorial Day weekend, May 26 and May 27, 2012, in downtown Brevard, North Carolina and this year’s music and street festival promises to be bigger and better than ever.  Brevard is often referred to as the “White Squirrel Capital of the World” and celebrates this rare variety by kicking off the festivities with the 5th annual Memorial Day Parade,  Saturday at 9 a.m., rain or shine, followed by a “Presentation of the Wreath” ceremony at the county War Memorial.

Headlining the 14 free concerts over the weekend are the Firecracker Jazz Band and the Jeff Sipe Group with special guest Ike Stubblefield and one of Brevard’s hometown favorites – Ethos! The main stage is located on West Main Street at the corner of West Main and Caldwell in downtown Brevard. The 5th annual White Squirrel 5K/10K is on for 8 a.m., Saturday, May 26, 2012, rain or shine, starting at the Brevard Music Center. The 10K race is fairly challenging, rolling and rural. One thing to keep in mind for race day, just in case you are a newbie, is to remember that you will be breathing cool mountain air at 2500 feet above sea level. So dress, breathe, feed and hydrate accordingly. You will love racing here in Brevard “Where Music Meets the Mountains.” So, go nuts!

The 6th Annual Squirrel Box Derby begins at 1:30 p.m. each day. Each cart is hand built and decorated designed for crowd-pleasing speed down Jailhouse Hill. Contestants compete for trophies for the fastest critter, the squirreliest theme, and the nuttiest design.

The nonprofit group, Heart of Brevard, which works to maintain downtown’s safe, vibrant lifestyle and economic development, hosts the White Squirrel Festival.
