Just over 20 miles from Brevard and Asheville, the historic city of Hendersonville, NC lies at the southern border of the Blue Ridge Mountains. With a population of just over 13,000, Hendersonville prides itself offering visitors the best in small town charm. It has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since March 1988. For visitors, downtown offers a glimpse back in time, and is showcased during events that are held throughout the year, such as the NC Apple festival, Labor Day celebrations, antiques shows, car shows and the like.
There is much to discover and appreciate in Hendersonville. A short ride from downtown on Hwy. 64 will bring you to Oakdale Cemetery. Here, you’ll find the very Italian marble angel statue memorialized in Thomas Wolfe’s first novel, Look Homeward, Angel. Or, take a hike – literally! The Pisgah National Forest and the DuPont State Forest are nearby. See local treasures at the Mineral & Lapidary Museum of Henderson County, where you will see local gems, fossils, geodes, as well as displays on loan from the Smithsonian and other renowned outlets on display. Finish the day with a trip to the Western North Carolina Air Museum, the first air museum built here in the "first in flight" state. Featured here is an impressive collection of antique and vintage airplanes which have been restored.
