Songsmith Gathering 2012 – Porter Center at Brevard College

The most talked-about event of the past two years is back and you’re invited! On May 19, 2012, the Porter Center at Brevard College will host the third annual Songsmith Gathering. The Gathering is an amazing night of song and a fundraiser benefitting SAFE, an agency providing services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. During the past fiscal year, SAFE has provided nearly 5,800 services to approximately 450 clients, including shelter for 102 women and children in crisis!

This year, doors to the Songsmith Gathering will open at 6 pm with a Happy Hour and a TLC Raffle featuring items following the theme of Travel, Love, and the Comforts of Home. Later at 7:30, attendees will enjoy an intimate evening with four prestigious singer-songwriters. This year’s artists are new to the event. Twice Grammy-nominated songwriter Sarah Siskind has written songs for both Randy Travis and Allison Krause. Asheville native Moses Atwood brings a soulful and gutsy sound to the scene, while Chris Rosser brings his world music-inspired stylings to the stage. And, last, Jill Andrews, whose song was just featured on popular television show, “American Idol” joins the crew for what promises to be an unforgettable evening.

This weekend, Nantahala Outdoor Center’s Wesser Campus plays host to what planners are calling a festival celebrating the greatest independent adventure travel films of all time! The Adventure Travel Film Festival will be held May 4-6, 2012 right here in gorgeously picturesque Western North Carolina.

This year’s festival features celebrated hosts, including filmmaker Austin Vince and travel writer Lois Pryce. Over the course of three days ,16 films will be screened that will touch the heart of the true adventurer. The independent films feature real people living real adventures – in the water, on rough terrain, pushing themselves farther than anyone could imagine possible.

The films range from adventures along the Yenisey River through Mongolia, Sibera, and to the Arctic Ocean, to adventures in the Himalayas. Filmmakers also showcase the beauty of Canada, the Rockies, and the rugged West in other selections. Guest speakers, workshops, and educational clinics will also be featured during the weekend event. Dupont State Forest – Tour de Falls

If you’ve always wanted to check out the DuPont State Forest waterfalls you’ll want to plan for the Tour de Falls coming up May 12th & 13th, 2012. Twice each year, in May and October, The Friends of DuPont State Forest sponsors the Tour de Falls, a 12 mile shuttle bus tour that will take you through the 10,300 acres of forest in Henderson and Transylvania Counties‘ Little River Valley to view Triple Falls, High Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Lake Julia. Shuttle buses run every 30 minutes from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to allow you maximum time to enjoy the beauty of each stop. You are encouraged to take some time to take short hikes or just go outside, sit, relax and take photos against the backdrop of some of the most gorgeous falls in the Southeast.

Advance reservations are not taken and shuttle service is first come, first served. The tour commences at 1300 Staton Road, Cedar Mountain, North Carolina at the High Falls access area. Just come to the parking lot, lock up and get on the shuttle. Pets are not allowed and buses are not handicap-accessible. Donations are used for forest trail and shelter maintenance as well as educational projects. The next time you are in the Brevard or Hendersonville area on Mother’s Day or sometime in October, the Tour de Falls is a great way to experience the beauty of the mountains and the spectacular falls found here in Western North Carolina’s Land of Waterfalls.

Tour the French Broad River via canoe this spring! Signs of Spring – 2012 is open for the spring season and features a guided canoe trip on the picturesque river on Saturdays throughout April, May and June. Guides will share stories of the area, as well as information regarding the local flora and fauna that make this area unique. The Signs of Spring tour is offered by Headwaters Outfitters in nearby Rosman, just 8 miles west of Brevard, NC.

During the tour, participants will row along the river learning about medicinal uses (among others) of the various plants in the mountain area. There are well over 2,500 species of wildflowers and flowering shrubs in the Transylvania County region, and many of them can be found here within the French Broad River watershed.

Bird watchers will get a kick out of witnessing the migration of springtime birds! Warblers, flycatchers, woodland ducks , blue herons, and other species come to dance and play and prepare to nest here. Beaver, mink, foxes and skunks can be seen here too. Trip participants will want to keep their cameras and sketchbooks at the ready.

The Hunger Games Fan Tours – Brevard, NC

Fans of “The Hunger Games” can test their mettle in the same arena where many of the “game” scenes from the movie were filmed – right here in Brevard, NC.

The brainchild of locals Leigh Trapp and Tammy Hopkins, The Hunger Games Fan Tours is a fan-based adventure experience that lets you explore the DuPont State Recreational Forest in Brevard, Transylvania County, North Carolina, in order to find locations used in the movie. You will use survival skills like orienteering, camouflage and shelter building. Weekend adventurers will team with Earthshine Mountain Lodge to make the experience as hands-on and immersive as possible all the while keeping safe around waterfalls. Survival classes during the weekend tours include archery, sling shot training, fire building along with the orienteering, camo-face painting and shelter sessions offered during the day sessions. Once you master these, you will be set loose on your Hunger Games simulation consisting of times trials for the skills. You will also night zipline just like Katniss and Rue, the main characters of the movie.

Day tours and weekend adventure tours welcome family groups. Children should be at least 10 and an adult must accompany any child under 16. Dates are being set up for the summer beginning in May. The cost is $79 per person with pre-registration required. Shuttle service and Hunger Games style food provided.

“Land of Waterfalls” Attracts Hollywood to Western North Carolina

“The Hunger Games,” shot in the lush woodlands of Transylvania County in North Carolina, opened in theatres March 23, 2012. It is one of over a dozen films shot recently in the “Land of Waterfalls” —the impact that likely will be felt on tourism and jobs for years to come. The natural beauty isn’t the only incentive for production companies to locate films in North Carolina. The state offers a 25 percent tax credit for productions spending over half a million dollars, and a generous lodging refund for visits exceeding 90 days. It’s a win-win situation that employs local actors and actresses to use as extras, fuels the local economy by employing construction workers, restaurant and lodging personnel for film crews as well as boosting the state’s tourism, especially for such highly touted films as Transylvania County’s “The Hunger Games.”

Other films shot here in Western North Carolina include “Thunder Road,” “The Last of the Mohicans,” and “The Healer.” “Iron Man 3” is prepping locally; shooting on the popular film series expects to begin soon.
